Photoshop offers two primary methods for altering the orientation of your images, each serving a different purpose regarding the scope of the transformation.

The first method, ideal for adjusting the overall document, operates at the canvas level, affecting all layers simultaneously. This is accessed via the menu path Image > Image Rotation, where options like 90° Clockwise, 180°, 90° Counter Clockwise, Flip Canvas Horizontal, and Flip Canvas Vertical are available.

The second, more granular method is designed for transforming individual layers. This is accomplished using the Free Transform tool, activated by pressing Ctrl + T (Windows) or Command + T (Mac) after selecting the desired layer. Once Free Transform is active, a bounding box appears around the layer, and specific transformation options become accessible in the Contextual Taskbar at the top of the interface or by right-clicking within the transform bounding box.

These layer-specific options include precise numerical rotation (e.g., typing 45 for 45 degrees), as well as Flip Horizontal and Flip Vertical for the selected layer. This distinction is crucial: canvas-level transformations will reorient every element in your document, while layer-level transformations provide independent control, allowing you to manipulate specific parts of your composition without impacting the rest.

• Always decide whether you need to reorient the entire canvas or just an individual layer before selecting your method.
